How can senior citizens live safely and independently within their own four walls, regardless of their care level? The GAiST research project funded as part of SmartLivingNEXT provides the answer: a model apartment in Hamburg’s oldest foundation, the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist, has been equipped with state-of-the-art smart living technology.

GAiST-Beitrag

This home lays the foundation for the implementation of new intelligent services, such as apps, which ensure that care services and relatives can easily and seamlessly keep an eye on the state of health of senior citizens and any new needs that arise. This offers senior citizens security and well-being in their own home.

Smart home components, sensors and measuring devices are installed in the show apartment to keep an eye on various things, including vital data such as blood pressure and pulse. The special feature: In order to detect changes in the everyday lives of senior citizens or their state of health at an early stage, this data is brought together in a standardized way using data room technologies and evaluated across devices and providers, including through the use of artificial intelligence methods. The data room enables the seamless collection and consolidation of information relevant to medical care as well as data on the living environment of senior citizens. This is the first time that legal and technical hurdles have been overcome that previously prevented the holistic use of this information. The GAiST model apartment is an important step towards sustainable, preventative care. Interested parties can find out more on site and experience how smart technologies can make everyday life easier for older people.
